Charles Darwin
Ex. Sir George Frampton Collection.
The plaque was completed four months before Darwin's death. Attwood lists six examples of this plaque and records that "Inspired by what he regarded as the naturalist's 'powerful and noble head'Legros sketched his his portrait on an envelope at a meeting of the Royal Society. The Magazine of Art noted the influence of the medallists of the Italian Renaissance and reacted enthusiastically to the portrait; 'There never was such a head for a medal as Darwin's, and the artist has made the most of it.'The truthfulness of Legros' portrait can be gauged from a description of his father by Darwin's son: 'His face was ruddy, his eyes blue- grey under deep overhanging brows and bushy eyebrows. His high forehead was much wrinkled, but in other respects his face was not lined."
