James II, “Tutamem Ab Alto”, silver medal, , 1685, by G. Bower, laureate bust of James II right, with hair in mantle, rev. a chair of state on which sits the British crown amidst rays coming down from heaven; beside the chair stands an angel bearing a flaming sword and an olive branch, TUTAMEM AB ALTO (PROTECTION FROM ON HIGH), 44 mm (MI 611/18). One or two minor marks, otherwise extremely fine, toned and rare. £Sold
This medal was struck by Bower soon after James’s accession. The symbolism of the reverse alludes to the supposed success that will follow from James’s reign.
