Sir John Soane, The Soane Testimonial, silver medal, 1834, by W. Wyon after F. Chantrey, bare head bust of Sir John Soane right, JOHN SOANE, rev. facade of the Bank of England, A TRIBUTE OF RESPECT FROM THE BRITISH ARCHETECTS/ MDCCCXXXIV, 57 mm, (BHM1662). Good extremely fine, a splendid architectural medal. Rare in silver. £Sold
The portrait is taken from a Chantrey bust and the reverse a specimen of Soanes architectural work. The medal was originally intended as a token of respect from his fellow architects but such was the interest that many private individuals subscribed to the medal and subsequently in 1835 these individuals met at the house in Lincolns Inn for the presentation. A full account of proceedings appears in the Gentlemans Magazine in 1835.
