Catholic Emancipation Act

Catholic Emancipation Act, painted transfer print snuff box, circa 1829, after Paul Pry, four figures standing in a line as if from a coach, George IV, the Duke of Wellington, Lady Conyngham, (George's mistress) and Robert Peel, each with a caption below alluding to their position within the coach, THE SLAP UP SWELL OT DRIVES WHENEVER HE WANTS/ THE MAN WOT DRIVES THE SOVEREIGN/ THE QUARD WOT LOOKS AFTER THE SOVEREIGN/ THE CAD TO THE MAN WOT DRIVES THE SOVEREIGN, 90 x 20 mm. Good very fine and rare. £Sold
The cast of characters appearing on the lid of the box were all more than a little reluctant to give Catholics greater rights. George, who along with his own aversion, also had the fanatically anti Catholic Duke of Cumberland breathing down his neck. The Duke only finally agreed when he realised that the alternative was politically untenable. Peel, previously know as "Orange Peel" is shown with the trap of a rat catcher bringing everyone into line.
The images are taken from a series of prints produced by William Heath in 1829.
