Bahamas, Lucyan Beach, Treasure Ship
Bahamas, Lucyan Beach, Treasure Ship, silver cob 8 reales, circa 1628, an 8 reales Mexican cob coin set into a necklace by the silversmith Roy Wilkins for Spink with 1972 silver marks. 45 x 43 mm, with pendant mount. Very fine. £Sold
The wreck was discovered in 1964 just off Grand Bahama Island, when some ten thousand 8 and 4 reales coins were discovered, the latest date of a coin being 1628. Although no specific ship has ever been identified the dating has led to certain suppositions as to the name of the ship.
Practically all the coins have been Mexican 8 and 4 reales of the assayer D period (Diego de Godoy 1618-1634).
