Queen Charlotte, Glass Print
The British Museum Catalogue, "London, 1753" describes this portrait very well emphasising the quality of Frye's mezzotint technique.
Horace Walpole described her appearance at Court on her arrival in London in September 1761; she was dressed in white and silver with an " endless mantle of violet covered velvet, lined with ermine and attempted to be fastened onto her shoulder by a bunch of large pearls....On her head was a beautiful little tiara of diamonds; a diamond necklace and a stomacher of diamonds, worth threescore thousand ponds which she is to wear at the coronation too."
Charlotte's love of jewellery became increasingly evident and provided fuel for the anti monarchists in the 1790s.
