Duke of Wellington, Wooden Portrait Plaque,Duke of Wellington, wood portrait, Made from the Wood of the Wellington Tree at Waterloo
John Children (1777-1852) of the British Museum went to Waterloo shortly after the battle and bought the elm tree under which the Duke of Wellington was stationed during the battle. From this tree, he manufactured numerous items, including these portraits. The Waterloo Museum at Broadstairs had a similar example in their collection.
