Death of Matthew Boulton Portrait Plaque, uniface lead medal, 1809, By P. Wyon after P. Rouw for Sir Edward Thomason, draped bust profile right, MATTHAEUS BOULTON ESQR. F. R. S. LN. & ED. TRI. & A. S. 102 mm(BHM. 660), contained in contempoary turned wood frame. The surface of the metal slightly soft with some marks, otherwise very fine and extremely rare. £Sold
There is a cast in brass in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery which also has the original wax for this portrait. Thomason in his "Memoirs" records that the Emperor of Austria ordering a silver example.
A uniface striking exists of the obverse with the same diameter signed by the artist Joachim Smith and with the modified legend Matthaeus rather than Matthew. This example has features from both types.
