Egypt, Sir Ralph Abercrombie, Portrait Plaque, sulphide, circa 1820, uniformed bust of Sir Ralph Abercrombie three quarters facing. 82 mm, contained in original brass frame with integral loop for suspension. Good very fine. £Sold
The portrait is very similar to the one used James Mudie for his medal of 1801 for the arrival of Abercrombie with the British Army in Egypt. This was part of a series issued by Mudie in 1820.
Sir Ralph Abercrombie, (1734 - 1801). General. The campaign of 1799 was fought against the pro Revolutionary forces in Holland of the Batavian Republic. The campaign led by the Duke of York was a disaster although Abercrombie came out of it well and was subsequently sent to Egypt to face Napoleon's forces near Alexandria, the scene of his greatest success and fatal wounds.
