The original playhouse was dated to 1727 and re-opened as a theatre in 1740, being demolished in 1746.
David Garrick made his debut here in 1741 as Richard 111. Garrick was so successful that he drew audiences away from the patent theatres of Covent Garden and Drury Lane.Such was the success that the patent theatres had it closed down in 1742.
