William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke, silver medal, , 1562, by S. Herwijck, bust right armoured and draped, GUILI. COMES. PENNEBROCK. A. 1562, rev. female figure standing beside a dragon indicating the Temple of Virtue, 45 mm (MI 104/30), with integral loop for suspension. A nineteenth century electrotype copy by Robert Ready, struck R on the edge. Good very fine. £Sold
William Herbert (1501?-1570), 1st Earl of Pembroke. He held high office throughout the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary and Elizabeth. His first wife Anne was sister to Catherine Parr. When he died in 1570 he was buried at St. Paul’s with almost unparalleled magnificence. The Earl’s badge was a green dragon which may be the illusion on the reverse
