City of London, Lord Mayor and Sheriff's Committee, silver gilt crossed shaped badge, 1854, four coats of arms in the angles, The Right Honorable/ Francis Graham Moon/ Lord Mayor/ Henry Muggeridge Aldn. / Chas. SIR FRANCIS GRAHAM MOON, Bart, (1796-1871)
As a young man, Moon joined Mr Tugwell of Threadneedle Street, book and print seller and on the death of his employer he was able to take over the business. He gradually rose to become the acknowledged head of his trade, and his reputation with the great artists of the day developed to such an extent that he produced major works by Wilkie, Landseer, C.R. Leslie and Samuel Prout. One of his most celebrated publications was David Roberts,"Sketches in The Holyland", which cost £50,000 to bring out. In 1830, Moon was elected a common council man; in 1843 he acted as Sheriff of London and Middlesex; in 1844 he was chosen Alderman of Portsoken Ward and in 1854 became Lord Mayor. On 28th April 1855 he received at Guildhall the Emperor and Empress of the French and was created a baronet the following May. Moon in turn visited Paris where the Emperor made him a Chevalier of the Legion d'Honeur.
