Sir Augustus Wollaston Franks, (1826-1897). Antiquary. Fanks was Keeper of the Department of British and medieval antiquities at the British Museum from 1866. Amongst his many achievements, he was the co-author of Medallic Illustrations of British History.
Franks was described by Marjorie Caygill, historian of the British Museum, as "arguably the most important collector in the history of the British Museum, and one of the greatest collectors of his age.
