The exhibition, which opened on 8th May, was held in South Kensington on a site now occupied by the Science Museum and Imperial College. Over four million people visited the exhibition which was so popular it had to be extended. The intention of the exhibition was to educate the public about hygiene, exercise and healthy diet and among the exhibits was a vegetarian dining room and the reconstruction of a medieval street, designed to showcase the innovations made in sanitation, electric lighting and water supply.
