George 111 Wax Portrait, , circa 1789, by Edward Burch, young head portrait of George 111 wearing Garter Star with hair tied back profile left, rev. inscribed on the reverse, GEORGE 111 BY H. G. BURCH/ REPLICA OF A WAX . . TO MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL FAMILY AFTER HIS DECEASE. 1820. 240 x 200 mm, contained in original turned wood frame with manuscript note. A small crack to the wax at the base of the body, otherwise good very fine, an attractive portrait. £Sold
Pyke records that Burch, (1730- 1814), was appointed engraver to the King in 1788. He worked in wax for Tassie and Wedgwood for whom he modeled portraits of George 111 and Queen Charlotte. see Riley and Savage p. 166/G, this model.
The example in the Earl of Pembroke's Collection in Wilton House, has written on the back, "Given by George 111's own hand to the Countess of Pembroke April 23 1789."
This was the day of his Thanksgiving Service for his recovery from insanity held at St. Paul's Cathedral.
