Leslie notes that the Museum of London has six examples of the Pope/ Devil stopper. They are thought to derive from abuses of the Roman clergy, which the Council of Trent had recognised. It is quite likely that these also were popular at the time of Titus Oates and the Popish Plot of 1678.
