Arthur William Patrick Albert, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn,(1850-1942), was the third son of Queen Victoria. Commissioned in the Royal Engineers in 1868, he transferred to the Royal Artillery and in 1878 to the 7th Hussars. Commanded with distinction the 1st Brigade of Guards during the Egyptian campaign in 1882 and commanded the army in Bombay, 1896-90. He spent a career in the army, renouncing his succession, and also devoted much of his energy to horticulture and freemasonry. He was Governor-General of Canada from 1911 to 1916.
