Rathfarnham Castle, dating from 1585, was built for Archbishop Loftus, Lord Chancellor and first Provost of Trinity College. The castle was converted into a Georgian mansion in 1770/71 for Henry Loftus, 1st Earl of Ely. The sumptuous interior was designed by James Stewart and the ceiling of the drawing room contained panels painted by Cipriani. By 1837 the house had been emptied of all its furniture and pictures by the 2nd Marquess of Ely who had intended to demolish it before it was acquired by the Rt. Hon. Francis Blackburne, Lord Chancellor Ireland.
