Thomas Gainsborough, (1727- 1789, painter. Originally from East Anglia when he moved to London he studied engraving under Gravelot and painting under Francis Hayman. Elected an original member of the Royal Academy in 1768.
The obverse portrait is taken from the painting by Zoffany. Thirty of these medals were given as prizes by the Art Union in 1859.Gainsborough's "The Wood Gatherers" is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
