Edmund Burke, wax portrait, circa 1791, by T. R. Poole, bare head bust of Edmund Burke with hair tied back profile left, indistinctly signed on the truncation, rev. inscribed on the reverse in manuscript, 147 x 118mm, (Pyke. 1973, Page113), contained in original turned wood frame. Some minor restoration, otherwise good very fine and vey rare. £750.00
The National Portrait Gallery has an example of this portrait dated 1791 and signed on the truncation, Poole.
This portrait was liked by Burke's biographer James Prior, who preferred it Hoppner's portrait of 1795-1801.
In 1774 Burke told his protege James Barry- "I never thought my portrait a business of consequence, i have been painted in my life five times, twice in little and three times in large."
