John Manners (1721-1770), having previously been MP for Grantham and Cambridge, he entered the army having raised a regiment of foot at his own expense to serve in the rebellion of 1745 where he accompanied the Duke of Cumberland into Scotland. Later, he served with distinction throughout the Seven Years War, especially at the victory at Minden, and subsequently became Master General of the Ordnance and Commander in Chief in 1766. He became a member of the Privy Council in 1760.
