This token would have been given to one of the very first seatholders of the Hall (also known as a Member of the Corporation of the Hall of Arts and Sciences). The token gave access to their seats at any time in those early years. This system quickly went out of use, with access to the building, and the number of shows seatholders could attend, being limited over time.
A selection of seats and boxes were sold to private individuals, before the Hall had even been constructed, in order to pay for the building. These seats remain in private hands to this day.
