London, St. James's Street, The Catch Club, Instituted 1762, silver pass, , by T. The Noblemen and Gentlemen's Catch Club of London arose from a meeting in November 1761, to establish a society for the composition and performance of catches and glees. An outline plan was drawn up and approved by them in May 1762, to revive renaissance music in London. (The Musical World, 1838, page 115).

The Club met at the Thatched House in St. James's Street. The Club offered a ten-guinea premium to the composers of the best catch, canon and glee, set to words either in English, Latin, Italian, Spanish or French. At the first striking of the medal a silver example was presented to the Duke of Devonshire.

The Thatched House was celebrated for nearly two centuries for its club meetings, its large public room and its public dinners, especially those of universities and famous schools.
