This was a great revolutionary festival, the chief participants being the National Guards delegations from all the departments. It was a massive spectacle at which over 300,000 people were present. Talleyrand and Lafayette were the chief officials and Louis XVI swore an oath on the constitution which Lafayette had read to the assembled crowds.
This event marked the height of revolutionary unity which it was unable to maintain in the years that followed.
