Plymouth Breakwater and Lighthouse, bronze medal, 1848, by Allen and Moore, a view of the lighthouse and breakwater, with ships at sea and hills in the distance, HE BREAKWATER LIGHTHOUSE WAS COMMENCED 1842. ERECTED UNDER THE SUPERINTENDANCE OF WILLIAM STUART. C. E. COMPLETED 1844. : 'DESIGNED BY WALKER ; BURGESS ENGINEERS. rev. a view of the breakwater with legend around, 'COMMENCED UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE ADMIRALTY 12TH AUGT. 1812 LENGTH 7, 100 FEET. STONE DEPOSITED 3, 638, 646 TONS. COST £150, 000, THIS MEDAL IN COMMEMORATION OF THE PLYMOUTH BREAKWATER WAS STRUCK BY ORDER OFF W. STUART SUPERINTENDENT ENGINEER AFTER A CONNECTION OF 37 YEARS WITH THAT UNDERTAKING 22ND AUGT 1848, 54 mm, (BHM. 2326). Unrecorded in bronze, extremely fine and rare. £Sold
The lighthouse and breakwater are still standing today.
The Gentleman's Magazine for 1844 p. 642 notes- "the breakwater was first suggested in 1806, the first stone was lowered on August 12 1812 under the supervision of Rennie. Most of the stone came from Orestone Quarry. The lighthouse on the breakwater being complete, the lights will be first exhibited on the evening of 1st June. The lights will burn on an elevation of 63 feet above the level of the highwater spring tides".
