Fantee sailing ship, engraved coconut, circa 1850, showing Jack Tar with Union Flag, ship and lighthouse. rev. the inside bearing a contemporary label, Given by an Old Sailor on the Barge Fantee on a Voyage from West Africa Around 1852, 118 x 87mm. Some damage above the Union Flag otherwise very fine. £Sold
The Fantee were an important tribe heavily involved in the slave trade in Ghana. The ship was registered in Bristol in 1847 with the Master T Dyer.By this time the ship would almost certainly have moved into the nut oil trade.
